ARC on Snow Leopard

  • I am running Xcode 4.2 on 10.6.8.

I want to convert projects to ARC using Xcode's built-in refactoring tool.

But the "Convert Objective-C ARC" refactoring item in the Edit menu is grayed out. The instructions on doing the conversion says the only thing to do ahead of time is to check the "Continue building after errors" box on the General pane of the general Preferences, which I have done. I also made sure I have the right compiler, LLVM 3.0, selected, which I have.

Can anyone suggest what more I need to do, or is it the case that the ARC conversion tool doesn't run on Snow Leopard?

    Thanks,

I may be terribly out of date, but does Xcode 4.2 not require Lion (10.7) to run? Are you /sure/ you're on Xcode 4.2?

Another possible point: Xcode used to refuse to refactor C++ code. Are you using Objective-C++?

  • Daniel,

Xcode 4.2 is available for Snow Leopard, available at the development website. I love it.

    I am using vanilla Objective-C.

    Thanks,

"Can I develop applications for Mac OS X with ARC using Snow Leopard?

No. The Snow Leopard version of Xcode 4.2 doesn’t support ARC at all on Mac OS X, because it doesn’t include the 10.7 SDK. Xcode 4.2 for Snow Leopard does support ARC for iOS though, and Xcode 4.2 for Lion supports both Mac OS X and iOS. This means you need a Lion system to build an ARC application that runs on Snow Leopard."

While we strongly recommend Lion, there is a version of Xcode 4.2 for Snow Leopard.

For iOS projects, at least, the ARC refactoring item works fine for me in Xcode 4.2 on Snow Leopard. m.

  • Xcode 4.2 on Snow cannot build for ppc though right?
