The spinning beach ball, if shown for more than one or two seconds,
is to most users the signal to either forcibly restart the Mac, or if
they're more versed, to use the "Force Quit" menu item to shoot down
the app. Use the Carbon watch cursor, if you must, but not the
coloured spinning beach ball of death.
