Leopard - interaction with Spaces from own applications

Hello mailing list,

how can I tell Spaces in Leopard from my own application, that it 
shall switch to the next space on the right side (for example), and 
how can I find out if Spaces is even activated at the moment? I hope 
someone can help me, or at least tell me where I might find the answers.
