Have you looked at the CoreAnimation example 'CovertFlow'? It's in /Developer/Examples/Quartz/CoreAnimation.

It implements CoverFlow to display images (specifically, the desktop pictures available on your Mac.) I expect it could be easily repurposed to display anything.

No undocumented code necessary.
