What is alternative to PDFKit on OS X prior to 10.4?

Hi, I'm trying to find an alternative to PDFKit utility class method 
pageCount for OS X 10.2 and 10.3 (as PDFKit is available for OS X 
10.4 or later).

I have read the PDFKit documentation and I'm using XCode 2.4 with 
10.4u SDK on PowerPC Mac.
