Well ..... :-) ... maybe fifteen to twenty years ago, but the 
advent of the ubiquitous Internet has drastically changed the rules.

  CoLo0LoGo, in addition to books, check the list guidelines (posted 
here regularly by the moderators) for all sorts of online resources. 
There is a wealth of tutorials and example code out there. Andreas' 
suggestion of starting out with your own code (so you know what it's 
supposed to do) is an excellent one.
