NSBrowser cell reference

Is there any way to obtain a reference to the NSBrowserCell before it 
is drawn when the NSBrowser uses a NSTreeController binding?  I'm 
aware that the delegate method browser:willDisplayCell:atRow:column: 
is available.  I need the cell reference so I can draw a different 
icon in each cell. Is the delegate method still the best solution?
