Generally speaking it's never really a good idea to try to play with 
private file formats since they have this nasty habit of changing 
without notice.

You didn't say what you "really need to do," but have you thought of 
letting iTunes do the heavy lifting via AppleScript? Then private 
file formats become a non-issue.
