I can repro this on a stock Tiger install (clean, not upgrade) with
these steps:
- Open TextEdit and type "ffffff" (or fi or fl; pick your favorite
ligature)
- Press cmd+shift+T to switch to plain text
- From the Font panel, choose Lucida Grande 144 point.
Voila, ligatures.
