I don't know how my experience compares to people in the UK, but I've
found that I can easily beat the WWDC rate at hotels that are just as
close, through online travel sites.  I'm not talking about something
like Priceline either, but places where you know exactly what you're
getting before you buy.

The strategy this year seems to be-- if possible-- to book hotel and
airfare from the same place.  When I booked, both Expedia and
Travelocity were giving huge disounts if you did this.  So I'm staying
at the Mariott, two blocks from WWDC, but the nightly rate works out
to about $97.50.

I don't know if that rate's still possible or not.  I booked plane
tickets first, and then both sites offered me discounted options if
I'd do a hotel as well.
