What makes you think /etc and /dev are hardlinks? /etc is a symbolic
link and /dev is a normal directory (used as a mount point for devfs).
Hard links don't really work on HFS.

What makes you think /etc and /dev are hardlinks? /etc is a symbolic
link and /dev is a normal directory (used as a mount point for devfs).
Hard links don't really work on HFS.
