well, forgive me, but that info is very dated and refers to problems
which should have been fixed but apparently haven't.
It seems that subclassing NSApplication (which I do already to catch
exceptions) is probably the best approach, although I haven't tried
doing this on Tiger and it remains to be seen if it will work.
The broken behavior of LSMinimumSystemVersion clearly needs to be fixed.
It seems bizarre to me that the solution to such a basic problem is so
convoluted.
