Syntax highlighting application

I'm writing an application that requires the ability to highlight
syntax. Keywords are very easy to highlight. The problem I am running
into is trying to highlight multiple line comments and lines that are
in single and double quotes. Is there any one out there that can assist
me in writing the code for highlighting multiline comments and quotes??
