In what sense "associated with"? Have you set the contentObject
binding for the object controller? Does the content object actually
exist (have you initialised it, and if so, when)? If the content
object's 'currentLocomotion' value is set prior to nib loading, does
that value appear in the text field?

Correct, assuming you have not overridden
'+automaticallyNotifiesObserversForKey:', that should not be necessary.
