Here's how I'd do it, assuming only personal use:
Panther (20 GB),
Tiger(10 GB),
Tiger server(10 GB),
Unallocated, future (10 GB),
Everything else (200 GB).
Install and boot Panther into its partition and set it all up the way
you need it. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate Users onto the
200 GB partition. Install Panther and Panther Server and set up the
same 501 user name for each. After you set up each OS partition, use
NetInfo Manager to retarget your "home" and "picture" properties by
prepending /Volumes/NameOfEverythingElseHD/ and after you reboot into
each of them, you can basically delete the folder for your local Users,
or at least for your account. Be sure to enable root for each of them
while you're there in NIM. Every time you perform a clean install of
the OS, all you'll need to do is modify your NetInfo and reboot, then
everything will be the same regardless of which OS you boot into, and
it allows you to erase the OS without affecting your user preferences.
I did it that way during Panther seed development and it worked well.
Some applications might need to be installed directly onto the OS
partitions, but can then be copied and aliased onto the main partition.
You may have other needs and want different partitions for video and
images, to make them easy to erase all at once, but it's not necessary.
YMMV. ;)
