Raising an alert panel from a daemon process

I have a background process (Foundation tool) running to detect certain
types of system activity. I'd like for it to be able to pop up an Alert
panel on the screen for certain events. Since NSAlert is an AppKit object, I
can't use it. Is there some other object for this purpose?
