why no autosave for NSSplitView?

Hi,

I was just wondering if someone could provide a technical explanation
about why there is no autosave available for NSSplitViews. I found
solutions to this problem that go back as far as 2001, so I assume that
the developers at Apple know about this, and are intentionally not
doing anything about it for a reason. But I can't figure out what that
reason might be, and I'm wondering if someone could shed some light on
this.
