Listing file types?

Hi,

A number of applications will list categories of file types that they
will open in the open file panel. Sometimes you'll see descriptive
terms (e.g. Word Document, iTunes Music File,...) and other times the
suffixes (*.doc, *.mp3,...). Is there a way to get a list of types that
are on the system or in a folder?
