Listen for when apps launch

Hi,
I was wondering if there was a way to listen for when a certain app
launches (e.g. Word)?  I would to make it so that when the user opens a
certain app (e.g. Word), my program then launches.  Is AppleScript the
best way to do this?  If so, anyone have any good leads or resources to
direct me to?
