Please, No! I get the creeps whenever someone proposes to adopt
something just because it's popular [I see your point, Greg,;  I
acknowledge your wise requirement: "after careful consideration" and
I'm *not* criticizing you. I'm looking at the issue from a broader
pov], the more so when the "something" in question comes from a
company owned by "microsama bill gates".
Maybe the reason is that I'm one of those 0.36%  Mac users unfamiliar
with windoze, or, more precisely, of those 0.01%  who *never used*
windoze
(I just refuse to *touch* any wintel contraption) ;->.
Of course, a balance must be maintained between standardization and
innovation, and Apple's history shows clear examples of good and
not-so-good moves in both directions (adoption of UNIX <-> loss of
features due to cheaper pc-derived hw
in some past model; introduction of .... [you name it, from the
mouse to the  17" laptop and beyond] <-> OpenDoc, QuickDraw GX, etc.
[not implying that they were bad "per se"]) but when in doubt, I'd go
for "think different"!
