Can run on read only vol

I've got a cocoa app that runs fine except when I put it on a read only disk
image. You click it and the zoom rects happen but the app doesn't run.  In
the console you get this message:

Launch failed with error code -2856

Can't find that error code in the headers, though it is in the CFM range.
Anyone else run into this?
