I don't John meant any harm, though I do agree that he might have been
a little more sensitive to Cocoa's worldwide practitioners. After all,
no one likes to see his/her language grammatically misused to prove a
point. Meine Meinung nach is that if you want to use another language
to prove a point, at least try to learn the correct way to use that
language. :-) It's simply a sign of respect -- especially given that
German is that most widely spoken first language in the EU (if you
count a learned, second language, then English is the most widely
spoken).
However, anyone who has ever studied at a German university (I studied
at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen) knows that fluency in English
is a practical necessity -- especially in any technical industry. Many
courses are taught in English (it simply states that a course will be
taught in English in course listings). So, when I looked at the
website I thought, "Oh wow, this is cool ... kind of like a refresher
course in German" ... but then I thought, "Man, most people are
probably going to freak because this is mostly in German." It's likely
that if the website wants to attract a more world-wide interest, that
it will have to be recast into something entirely in English. And I
say that as someone who loves and respects German culture and the
German language.
By the way, my alma mater (the TUM) is one of the only universities I
know that teaches Cocoa as a "for credit" course. :-) Just something
to keep in mind whenever you think of Germany and Cocoa. :-)
Mit fruendlichen Gruessen!
