Transparent patches

Is it possible to adjust the transparency of individual areas of a window
separately?  E.g. if I have a text label or field, can I make the majority
of the window transparent, but the text field opaque?  I ask because I'd
like to use transparency only on areas that aren't textual, so that my app
remains fully functional while offering back some screen space...
