does my program need GPL

I just wrote a GUI wrapper for LAME, the mp3
encoder/decoder.  since LAME is GPL, does my program
need to be under GPL? i'm going to release it and the
source for free regardless, but i was just wondering
if i am obligated. also, how would i go about
releasing it under GPL? thanks
