Where is Xcode?

  • I can't find the install on the 3 mac os x install discs.

Where is the pkg for xcode (dev tools for panther)?

Where does it get installed to?

    Yelp!!

When I bought my G4 last year I found the Developer Tools in a folder
    called Installers
which was inside the Applications folder, you might look there.

it requires panther so there's no reason for them to put it up for

Why a few months? Panther was released yesterday.

The front page of the Apple developer site does state that XCode is now
available for download to all ADC members, but it does not appear under
ADC. [Maybe Safari has a hack that tells the server which OS you are
running. I'm running 10.2.4 so naturally, XCode is unusable for me, :-)

Most likely someone forgot to turn on a switch, it will probably appear
in the next day or two.

Because if you bought Panther, you have Xcode on a CD and wouldn't have
to download it.  In fact, you shouldn't have to download it until they
    update it.

Well if someone else is going to say it, I might as well, too.  Xcode
just us a little more... complex than PB.  Being familiar with PB, I
learned how to use Visual Studio 6 faster than I'm "relearning" Mac OS
X development with Xcode.  Everything just seems to be hidden.  Target
options are in a weird place (the inspector window is kind of
annoying), it took me forever to figure out how to display the command
line calls and output (I had to do that because Xcode reported a failed
build because of 1 Error, but the error didn't show up where you think
it would: in Errors and Warnings).  I'm still figuring out how to get
"other linker flags" to appear in the command call before other flags
(i need to link to libz before a custom library, but how?) ...

Before this turns into a big fat rant, I'll stop myself.  I'm sure I'll
get more efficient at using Xcode; I just hope any speed improvements
Xcode provides aren't wasted on its interface, which I'm not really a
fan of right now.  Give me time.

Well, you're not alone. I really liked version 2.x of ProjectBuilder. I
could open any section from the keyboard and everything was working fine
    inside a single window. On a 1024 x 768 screen, that makes a difference.
With Xcode, I need to keep a few windows opened and have to navigate from
one to the other in order to get to what I need. If you thought it was hard
finding the target, wait until you want to add a subproject to a main
    project!

Gates's Law: "The speed of software halves every 18 months." This oft-cited
law is an ironic comment on the tendency of software bloat to outpace the
every-18-month doubling in hardware capacity per dollar predicted by Moore's
Law. The reference is to Bill Gates; Microsoft is widely considered among
the worst if not the worst of the perpetrators of bloat.

The general impression I get is they threw PB into a woodchipper after
    Jaguar and now have XCode.

I'm sure I'll understand the new methodologies someday, but this summer
has been a series of WTH? moments...

In a question in a related vein to the parent thread, does anyone know
whether you have to buy the full copy of Panther to get Xcode and the
new developer tools, or are they also available via the upgrade version
    of Panther?

  • Just for anyone else out there still wanting Xcode and has Panther
without the dev tools disc, you can now download it from ADC with the
free membership account. It's only available as a split download and is
around 584 megs. Just thought I'd mention it.

Just out of interest, how did you manage that?

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, perhaps he deleted the
"Installers" folder without thinking.  I did that with Jaguar when I
first got it (on a new computer)... a bit over-zealous with the
new-computer-cleaning.. :)  I didn't realize at the time that the dev
tools package was hidden away on one of the software restore cd's, but
it only took 10 minutes to download from ADC anyway - the ADC site
always runs exceptionally fast, to Apple's credit.

The European server seems pretty slow, though.  Well, at least it does
from the UK.  It always seems faster for us to use the US ones.

    Kind regards,
