.ppc binaries still instantiable on Intel Macs?

  • Hi all,

Would someone please confirm or deny that as from OS 10.5.6 it is no
longer possible to instantiate .ppc binaries on Intel Macs?
I'm pretty sure is was still possible under 10.5.x (for x<6)

    thanks!

    D.

    I just built all 4 platforms - PPC,Intel * 34,64 on an Intel machine
    under 10.5.6
  • thanks all - omission bug in installer instructions.
flag:  don't follow the instructions - they maybe wrong!

Define 'instantiable'? PPC apps run under Rosetta, x86 apps run
natively. What never worked is loading PPC libraries into x86 apps or
vice versa, and of course you need a 64-bit CPU to run 64-bit binaries
(not sure if Rosetta does PPC64 though... anyone know?).

According to Fritz Andersson, Xcode 3 unleashed, it don't

    Correct.

32-bit PowerPC Machines can run 'ppc'
32-bit Intel Machines can run 'i386' and 'ppc' (via Rosetta)

64-bit PowerPC Machines can run 'ppc' and 'ppc64'
64-bit Intel Machines can run 'i386', 'x86_64' and 'ppc' (via Rosetta)
