OpenGL 3.0

  • Hi,

is there any chance to get OpenGL 3.0 drivers for leopard? (GeForce
    8600M GT)

PS: I would have asked this in a mail to apple directly.... but it
looks like if I am too stupid to find any contact eMail adress at the
    Apple Website.. >.<

I don't think there's an email address for this sort of thing. The way
to do this is to file an enhancement request in the bug reporter:

  • I would be shocked if Apple adds OpenGL 3.0 to an existing release.
That sort of update typically just gets added to the next major
release (Snow Leopard).  Obviously you can ask, but I wouldn't hold
your breath for it on Leopard.

It all depends what you want to do, and which graphics chip you have.

The biggest thing in GL3 was the deprecation scheme for removing things from
GL in future releases, and you don't need a driver for that.

  • So you would be shocked to get an up to date driver for your graphic
    card? wow..

I don't realy need the new features of OpenGL 3.0, but on OSX we are
still using the Nvidia 2.0 driver... for Windows Nvidia released the
2.1x already more then 6months ago.
And there have been a lot of bug fixes specially for Shaders (mainly
Geometry Shaders) in it.. and I realy don't get the point why we don't
    get an updated driver!

For Linux and Windows you can install a new updated driver more or
less every week if you want.. on OSX, you'll have to wait 6-12 Months,
and then even have to pay for it.. !! o.O

Many minor releases of Mac OS X have included updated drivers, bug
fixes, etc. for the OpenGL sub-system, etc. and you don't pay for
those. The major releases are on an 18 month to 2 year release train
these days (last few releases) and yes you do pay for those (however
    not always, 10.1 was free).

If you have an issue that is causing you and your customers problems
file defects to ensure Apple knows of the problem and its importance.
Also discuss the issue on this list (best to quote the bug number) to
see if others have work-arounds and/or to encourage others to file
defects as well related to the issue (if it affects them).

We all would love to have the latest and greatest bits on our systems
but Apple packages, tests, and distributes the drivers as part of
their OS more directly the other vendors (for good reasons).

Given the goals of snow leopard they likely have good amount of work
to do but hopefully on a smaller system matrix going forward...

I think it's worth pointing out here that graphics drivers on Windows
are very different to the drivers for OS X.  As a result, comparing
version numbers between OS X and Windows isn't a sensible thing to
do... while the drivers *may* contain some shared code, there is no
guarantee that the version number reflects any kind of relationship
    between the two platforms' drivers.

In any event, if you are finding that there is some bug, or that you
need some additional feature, in the OS X drivers for a particular
card, you should file a bug report with Apple on the subject.  If you
need more than that, you can always contact DTS and ask them for
    assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Alastair.
