weird screen saver problem

  • I've got a screen saver I wrote prior to Panther that stopped working.
There was one bug I worked around pretty quickly in NSData's URL
loading stuff.  No problem, I updated it to use NSURLConnection which
made things a lot better anyway.

However, I've got this new strange problem I can't figure out.  My
screen saver works fine in saver lab, and even in the ``Test'' thing
under system preferences, but I just get a black screen when the actual
    screen saver kicks in.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

When it kicks in after hitting the Preview button in System Preferences
or when it kicks in from a hot-corner or idle delay?

This almost always happens when the screen saver experiences an
error, such as an unallocated object. Is there anything in the
console? Are you using OpenGL or Quartz to draw?

Man, I always forget about console.  I've only seen this happen on one
machine, and I don't have that machine right now, so I'm hoping it was
some weird fluke of some sort.

The puzzling thing was that it worked with ``Test,'' but not when the
screen saver activated.  Anyway, thanks for reminding me again to look
    at console.

I have exactly the same problem when using transparency AND setting a password to unlock the screen.

I searched the list but couldn't find more in this thread. Did someone find a solution?
